This coin was on a blog a while ago, and completely forgot about posting it. It’s a special commemorative coin, a 5 euro coin. The Dutch Ministry of Finance organized an architecture competition for which a selected group of architectural offices (unstudio, nox, …) and artists were invited, including Stani Michiels.
Stani Michiels, approached the subject ‘Netherlands and Architecture’ from two points of view. On one hand Stani paid tribute to the rich Dutch architecture history and on the other hand to the contemporary quality of Dutch architecture. These form also the two sides of my coin. Traditionally the front of the coin needs to portray the queen, while the back side displays the value of the coin.
More information about how Stani used free computer software to create and conceptualize this coin can be found on Stani’s Blog
To me this coin is a beautiful piece that has so much information on it, it could entertain someone for hours, just reading the names, coming up with new names and inspecting all the different patterns created.
